We value expertise, safety, and a commitment to long-term client relationships.

Construction Estimator (Heavy Civil/Site Work)

Location: New London County

Salary: $90,000 – $120,000 (Based on experience)

Role Summary:

The Estimator will be responsible for preparing detailed, accurate, and competitive estimates for a wide variety of public and private heavy civil, site excavation, and infrastructure projects. This role is crucial to securing profitable contracts and requires a deep understanding of earthwork, utility costs, material sourcing, and public bid processes (including CTDOT and municipal work).

Core Responsibilities:

  • Bid Preparation & Submission: Prepare full cost estimates and bid proposals by analyzing engineering drawings, specifications, and project documents for heavy civil and commercial site work.
  • Quantity Take-Offs: Perform detailed quantity take-offs for all scope components, including earth moving, grading, utilities (water, sewer, drainage), asphalt/paving, and specialty items like seawalls or dam structures.
  • Subcontractor & Vendor Management: Solicit, evaluate, and qualify quotes from subcontractors (e.g., specialized trades) and suppliers, negotiating pricing and validating scope of work compliance.
  • Cost Analysis & Data: Maintain and leverage a historical cost database to refine estimates, identify potential risks, and account for market fluctuations in labor, equipment, and materials.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Vice President, Project Managers, and field operations teams to develop execution strategies and transition awarded projects efficiently.
  • Risk Assessment: Identify deficiencies or ambiguities in design documents (RFI generation) and propose value engineering alternatives to meet budget requirements.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in estimating, specifically for heavy civil, site work, or public infrastructure projects (CTDOT, municipal bids, etc.).
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Technical Proficiency: Expert proficiency in digital take-off software (e.g., Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff) and advanced skills in Microsoft Excel. Familiarity with specific heavy civil estimating software (e.g., HCSS HeavyBid) is a significant advantage.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of construction means, methods, materials, and sequencing related to excavation, utilities, and roadwork.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills required for proposal writing, subcontractor negotiation, and client interaction.
  • Detail-Oriented: A proven ability to manage multiple complex bids simultaneously under aggressive deadlines with uncompromising accuracy.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) and company holidays.
  • Opportunity for professional growth and leadership development within a respected regional firm.
